How good is your network?

You’ve invested in the latest and greatest fiber connection available in your neighborhood but you WiFi is dropping out or is just sluggish.  There are a number of reasons you could have a slow wifi network and we’re going to share some WiFi troubleshooting tips with you.

Overloaded WiFi network

These days it’s easy to connect every appliance. So many are smart home ready, meaning you can follow some quick set up steps and get it onto your WiFi network. This can create a bit of a Bucking Bronco situation where you’re adding more and more devices, and the network is essentially deciding for you where the priorities are and what should be allowed to “fall” off. Did you know that access points can only handle a certain amount of concurrent connections? Once you reach this number something’s got to go, to allow you access. Always choose an AP with enough connections for your network, and remember every DIY smart home device you bring home will use up one of these connections.

Wired versus wireless

One way to alleviate this problem is to hardwire wherever you can. If your home has wiring for TVs, use them. Don’t just connect your smart TV to the WiFi network. Or at least connect your streaming device to the hard wired network – whether a ROKU, Apple TV or any other streaming product. This will immediately free up some of the WiFI for mobile devices.

MultiGB internet being choked

Your network speed is only going to deliver this speeds if the right equipment is handling it. Any hard wired WiFi access points will be connected to a switch. If that switch is a 1GB model then that’s all you’ll ever get to those access points. A quick fix is to invest in a multiGB switch from a trusted brand like our favorite Access Networks, so you can truly benefit from the speed you are paying for your home network.

Devices highjacking the network

Some audio products prioritize their network traffic overs yours. This creates problems especially if you have wireless speakers. If you think you have this problem give us a call for a no obligation network upgrade quote.

WiFi 6 and beyond….

Is your equipment enabled for the latest WiFi release? If you’re about to invest in your home network, make sure it’s at least WiFi 6 compatible. Otherwise you’re being left behind when it comes to delivery speeds.
